The History of Judo

Judo, which means The Gentle Way or Give Way, is a Japanese martial art based upon the ancient technique of Jujutsu. Professor Jigoro Kano, who developed judo in 1882, had studied jujutsu, and incorporated the best of this ancient technique into the new Kodokan Judo. In 1964, Judo became an official event in the Olympic Games. Judo is mainly divided into two components.

  1. Throwing technique, using your hands, feet, body to throw your opponent.
  2. Grappling technique, to hold your opponent down effectively.

Compared to Jujutsu

There is a superficial similarity between some of the movements in Judo and Jujutsu. However, Jujutsu is an art of self-defense where you may, as you desire, punish, damage, or even kill your opponent. By using what is necessary to defend yourself. In Japan Jujutsu is practiced as a military art, whereas Judo is taught in schools.

Judo Philosophy

The main principles of Kodokan judo are Maximum Efficiency and Mutual Welfare and Benefit. The goal of maximum efficiency, teaches the judoka to use the least amount of physical strength necessary to throw an opponent. The goal of mutual welfare and benefit helps the individual become a better member of society through courage, respect, honor, self-control and politeness.
